ISA awarded CEC Innovation Prize

ISA’s product innovation was recognized during the 1st Gala Empresarial da Região Centro, organized by CEC/CCIC – Conselho Empresarial do Centro / Câmara de Comércio e Indústria do Centro. The main goal of the event was to promote entrepreneurship and competitiveness amongst Portuguese companies, and it took place on June 29th at the Figueira da Foz Casino, where ISA was distinguished with the Award for Best Practice in Innovation/Management.

At ISA, Innovation has been part of the corporate culture since its inception –this is the key factor behind ISA’s international success and what keeps the company on the leading edge of technology, meeting the expectations of its clients and staying one step ahead of the competition.

ISA’s innovation capacity has been recognized by several national and international bodies. The distinction awarded by CEC/CCIC is a privilege and it will be one more incentive for the company to continue betting on Innovation, a differentiating factor with regard to its competitors.

ISA once again at Metering Europe Exhibition

ISA will once again be present at Metering Europe exhibition, which will take place in Vienna, Austria, between the 2nd and the 4th October this year. Following last year’s example, when ISA was awarded the Innovation prize at the European Utility Awards, ISA will be present with a boot at the 4.44 position, where the most recent innovations of ISA in the multi-metering and energetic efficiency fields will be shown. ISA will also actively participate at the conference program, with a communication entitled “Domestic Energy Efficiency supported by Multi-Utility Metering“ and presented by ISA CEO, José Basílio Simões and by Quercus vice-presidente, Francisco Ferreira, a national environmental organization.

In an event that gathers the biggest companies in the Metering and Energy fields, ISA pretends to reinforce its position of one of the key players in the Utility Metering market.

ISA and Quercus develop EcoCasa project

ISA, always in the stream of new technologies and actively focused in projects related to environmental preservation, associated itself to the project EcoCasa, developed in partnership with Quercus, a national environmental association. This pilot aims to co-relate electricity consumption in different Portuguese geographical areas and temperatures felt in which one. It consist in the deployment of equipments developed and produced by ISA, namely the iMeter (which enables electricity consumption reading) and the iPoints (which measure temperature) in 200 homes, distributed by 4 or 5 different portuguese climatic areas during some months, with the goal to identify consumption patterns and develop good practices in the energetic efficiency field. In a few words, this project pretends tot Monitor, to Interpret, to Form and to Disseminate. A website was also developed to enable the access to several data such as accumulated values by each reading equipment or historic.

ISA develops a non-invasive sleep apnea detection system

Sleep Apnea is a medical condition affecting the sleep of a number of patients, blocking their breathing tract during sleep, and preventing them from enjoying a night rest.

Sleep Apnea is thought to affect roughly one third of the adult population, and it is increasingly prevalent in children, as it is correlated to increasing rates of obesity in the general population.

Until now, Sleep Apnea Syndrome’s diagnosis required a complicated and expensive study to be performed in a hospital environment. That diagnosis was especially hard in the case of children, due to the unfamiliarity of the environment and the discomfort of sleeping attached to a number of devices, which tends to falsify the results of the exam.

Sleep@home, the new system developed by ISA meets those challenges by being completely non-invasive and deployable in the comfort of the home. In fact, it is a portable system, which can be easily setup by the child’s own parents. It monitors the child’s sleep in his or her everyday bed. The system can thus flag possible sleep pathologies, without the need for an overnight stay.

Sleep@home is part of ISA’s new strategy in the field of biomedical instrumentation, where it hopes to take advantage of its many years experience designing and producing robust and reliable devices, and its know-how in advanced telecommunications. In partnership with the biomedical engineering department at the University of Coimbra and many other national and foreign research groups, ISA is committing to development and innovation for promoting a stellar industry, also in the field of biomedical engineering.

New access control and tracking system

ISA just developed an access control and tracking system for people and goods, based upon RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology.

The new system, named TraceMe, allows you to automatically and non-obtrusively control access to different parts of a building, with applications in hospitals, public buildings, company headquarters, and industrial plants. Automatic access control is remotely achieved by radio frequency communication between an access card carried by the user and a set of strategically placed antennae spread throughout the building. Besides controlling access to restricted areas, without the need for touching key locks, keyboards or biometric systems, the system is also able to trace the position of a specific user for a more immediate contact. Furthermore, the system is able to trace the position of sensitive mobile equipment, triggering alarms when those equipments are moved outside their designated areas of operation. In a hospital environment, the system can also be used to prevent the disappearance of children, elderly patients, and mentally challenged patients.
